Where Were You in 2004?

Rewind 20 years ago, NewDay Services held one FOCUS Fatherhood class weekly in Fort Worth. Fast forward to today, we serve fathers and mothers in 64 Counties with 22 classes weekly. In 2004, we served approximately 100 parents with FOCUS Fatherhood classes and now we serve over 1,900 fathers and mothers a year in our FOCUS+ programs. WOW, that is what you call growth!

How does that happen? I have one quick answer. God blesses faithful people who honor him. Galatians 6:9 says “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Despite obstacles that have come our way, we will not give up our mission of doing good for families in crisis. A foundation of faith was established by our founder Randy Thomas in 1997. In 2002, he passed the baton to Elna Vanderberg, a godly woman with a lot of spunk from South Africa who led us for 13 years. Tommy Jordan took the helm as Executive Director in 2015 to lead NewDay through much growth through mid-2021. These three faithful people trusted God and His promises. They persevered through difficulties and obstacles and did not give up on doing good.

We continue to reap a harvest of blessings thanks to those who came before us. There are new opportunities on the horizon to serve more hurting people who are coming our way and along with these opportunities come obstacles. I can tell you though that this Management team will not back down to challenges but will be good stewards of every opportunity to serve hurting people in a way that honors our God.

If you are not already doing so, please consider how you might join us financially to support our mission. Or perhaps you would like to volunteer with us in our service to others. No matter, please call or email me and I would love to get together with you and get to know you better.

 Blessings,

Mentor-Navigators deliver comprehensive, holistic support to clients using a relational engagement approach. They play a vital role in the success of parents enrolled in our CPS FOCUS+ Programs. While parents gain valuable life skills through the classes, Mentor-Navigators help reinforce those concepts and identify opportunities in real-world situations.

Level I: Foundational Learning & CPS Navigation
Mothers and fathers who complete the 10-week class cycle gain the skills to protect their children’s health and safety, prepare them for productive futures, and understand their unique developmental needs. Participants deepen their understanding of parental roles, responsibilities, and cultural values. They also learn how to navigate the CPS system effectively—leading to positive case outcomes and acquiring vital life skills for long-term success.

Level II: Mentor Navigation & Overcoming Barriers
Advancing from Level I, participants actively work to overcome barriers such as parenting challenges, employment struggles, housing instability, lack of resources, and transportation issues.

Level III: Family Preservation & Goal Achievement
Parents demonstrate significant progress toward their personal goals and CPS service plans. Participants strengthen their families by applying the Five Protective Factors, promoting long-term stability, resilience, and family preservation. Through this multi-tiered approach, our FOCUS+ programs provide holistic, trauma-informed support that equips parents with the skills and confidence needed to rebuild their lives, nurture their families, and secure a brighter future. Mentor-Navigators work with CPS - FOCUS+ participants to move them from where they are to where they obtain self-sufficiency. We empower them—giving them the tools and life skills to better determine their own future and the future of their children. We strengthen their role as a parent by impacting their attitudes, knowledge, and behavior. The process includes a variety of strategies, techniques and resources designed to build on the participants’ strengths and overcome barriers. By placing a dedicated Mentor-Navigator with clients in our FOCUS+ (Families Offering Children Unfailing Support) Programs, parents remain engaged, working toward healthy parenting and self-sufficiency.

A Letter from Senior Chaplain Scott Pospisil

The majority of my twenty-one hours each week at the courthouse was spent walking through waiting rooms and foyers, talking with people anxiously awaiting meetings with a judge or an Attorney General lawyer—most often about child custody or financial support cases. With their permission, I would often encourage them to seek strength from the Lord, offer to pray with them, or share a gospel tract.

The second largest portion of my time was devoted to building relationships with bailiffs, judges, and other courthouse staff. I regularly reminded them about our NewDay parenting and anger resolution courses and let them know I was available to support them in any way they needed. These conversations sometimes led to referrals for parenting or relationship counseling and encouragement.

The remainder of my time was spent answering calls from individuals inquiring about how to register for NewDay’s FOCUS+ Parenting or Anger Resolution courses. I also coordinated the twice-weekly online devotional with NewDay staff and met monthly to encourage Kristi and Mike, the two chaplains at the Juvenile Detention Center.
